Decisions and Next Steps

Hey folks.

I know it’s been a while since you’ve heard any details about our adoption, so we’d like to update you on that. We haven’t written anything in a while because, honestly, there wasn’t much to write about. We were in a holding pattern, waiting to be matched with a child.

Just a reminder: our agency’s Macedonia program is a pilot program, and we were the first pilot family. We went in knowing one thing: there would be a lot of unknowns. We were the “guinea pigs” for our agency’s adoption program in Macedonia. And we were, and are, glad to have been able to serve in that capacity.

As we navigated the process with our agency, we learned a lot about the adoption process in Macedonia. The more that we learned about the system through our agency and the workers on the ground, the more that it seemed that, for us, being matched with a child was extremely unlikely. So, for me and Emily, this led to a long season of struggle.

Do we continue pursuing adoption in a situation where the odds seemed insurmountably against us, trusting a God who can do more than we can ask or think?

Or, is God’s plan different than we thought? Perhaps it was His will for us to spend our time and ourselves piloting this program up to a point, and then transition to a program in a country that will do what we began this whole adoption journey to do: bring home a child?

These questions were excruciating for us. The longer we waited in our process with Macedonia, the more we considered transitioning to another country. Yet, the more we considered switching, the more that we felt we just didn’t have enough faith to stay the course when things became difficult.

Thankfully, we weren’t left alone with our questions. Our agency and our case worker helped us process these things with grace, care, and concern for our ultimate goal: to adopt a child. Further, as we prayed to the Lord, we believe that He gave us direction through some particular life circumstances.

All of that is a long-winded and very personal way to say that we are no longer pursuing adoption from Macedonia. We are thankful to the Lord to have been able to be apart of our agency’s program, helping navigate the process and learn more about the details of the system there. Our agency and our case worker have been phenomenal, and we are personally grateful to them for their support, prayers, and grace through this process.

So, we are still pursuing international adoption through our agency. More details to come in the next post…

“Trust in the Lord with all your heart, and do not lean and your own understanding. In all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make straight your paths.” Proverbs 3:5-6
